[Users] strange problem with nagios nrpe server

Believe me, thats the first thing I checked.

I've run nrpd under strace and see nothing out of the ordinary; it finds 
the correct number of files in the nrpd.d directory. Not much of a whizz 
with strace tho so don't know where to go from here.
