This core scheduler part has not changed too much from the bfq patches,
so I'll try to answer your questions; Vivek, please correct me where
my knowledge is outdated.  I preferred to leave out the questions about
code that was not in the original patches.

service is unsigned long, so it can be 32 bits in 32 bit machines,

yes.  here the situation is that we actually don't care about the type
of weight, as long as it can contain a 32 bit value, and weights should
never reach near the 2^32 boundary, otherwise we're prone to any kind
of numerical error.  there are no problems with weight being u32.

bfq_calc_finish() is used in two cases:

  1) we need to resync the finish time with the service received by an
    entity

  2) we need to assign a new finish time to an entity when it's enqueued

with preemptions 1) can happen with service = 0, and we need to reset the
finish time to the start time (depending on how preemptions are implemented),
so in this case we'd have a false positive (leading to a crashed system :) ).

are you sure?  AFAICT walk_tg_tree() walks all over the tree, this just
walks a single path to a node up to the root, I don't see what the two
have in common.

according to the paper cited above, we need to update the min_start
value on the path from the deepest node modified by the extraction
up to the root.  this function tries to consider all the cases of RB
extraction, looking for the deepest node that (after all the rotations
etc.) will need an update to min_start.  one interesting property
of RB trees is that this can be done in O(log N) because there is a
single path that needs to be updated.

min_start is that it partitions the tree in two regions, one with
eligible entities and one without any of them.  once we know that
there is one eligible entity (checking the min_start at the root)
we can find the node i with min(F_i) subject to S_i < V walking down
a single path from the root to the leftmost eligible entity.  (we
need to go to the right only if the subtree on the left contains 
no eligible entities at all.)  since the RB tree is balanced this

I have no strong opinions on that, during debugging it helped a lot
to identify the role of variables in the code, but common practice in

it's badly written (my fault), but it intended to say that this field is
used to allow the lookups to be done in O(log N).  without augmenting
the RB tree with min_start, lookups could not be done in O(log N),
because we want a constrained minimum search.
