The patch is quite long and to be honest requires a long time to
review, which I don't mind. I suspect my frequently diverted mind is
likely to miss a lot in a big patch like this. Could you consider
splitting this further if possible. I think you'll notice the number
of reviews will also increase.

Why is the return type int and not unsigned int or unsigned long? Can
the return value ever be negative?

Why is the case required? Does the compiler complain? service is

I don't like this every much, we set the min_time twice, this can be
easily optimized to look at both left and right child and pick the
minimum.

Just to check my understanding, every time an active node is

Please help me understand this, we sort the tree by finish time, but
search by vtime, start_time. The worst case could easily be O(N),

Could you mention what key is used in the rb_tree? start, finish
sounds like a range, so my suspicion is that start is used.
