[Users] Out-of-memory question

I'm hitting a strange error, and I wanted to get the input of the list
on it. When I try to execute java on the VE, I get this error:
[iguana at charade ~]$ /usr/local/java/bin/java -version
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for object heap
Could not create the Java virtual machine.
If I run java from the HN, no problems, it reports the version
information as expected.
Any ideas?
Information to (hopefully) help figure out what's going on:
System:
512MB RAM, 700MHz Athlon Processor
RedHat FC 4 (latest updates applied)
kernel-2.6.18-ovz028test007.1
VE: CentOS 4.4
