[Devel] c/r: some cleanup for sockets

Dan,

While trying to fix a compilation warning from the socket c/r code, I
ended up doing some cleanup, that isn't particuarly structured.

It compiles flawlessly for me, but I didn't give it much testing. Let
me know what you think.
