Hi Ola,

please check:
http://download.openvz.org/debian/dists/etch/main/binary-i386/base/

1) linux-image-2.6.18-openvz-12-1etch1-486_028.18.1etch2_i386.deb
2) linux-image-2.6.18-openvz-12-1etch1-k7_028.18.1etch2_i386.deb

take a look in this dir, download the 1) and 2) linux-image packages 
install it!
(A full featured kernel has not a filesize of 8.3MB or 1.2 MB !!!)

This error occurs:
# dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.18-openvz-12-1etch1-486_028.18.1etch2_i386.deb
[...]
dpkg-deb (subprocess): short read in buffer_copy (failed to write to 
pipe in copy)
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste returned error exit status 2
[...]

And now ?! What kind of package have you download, the two above still 
not in package list:

# apt-get search linux-image-2.6.18-openvz

     - Linux kernel binary image for version 2.6.18-openvz-486
p   linux-image-2.6.18-openvz-686

p   linux-image-2.6.18-openvz-k7 
     - Linux kernel binary image for version 2.6.18-openvz-k7

-> the broken are missing, so you have download the "old" -486
(linux-image-2.6.18-openvz-12-1-486)
